Soft, buttery, pillowy Naan Bread {homemade & easy} that is simple, delicious and made on a skillet. Sign me up!

Recipe Updated [4/29/19]: I’ve been making this Naan for a few years now and it has never let me down! It is more work than store-bought (obvi) but it’s really so worth it. When it’s fresh, the naan is soft, buttery and way more pillowy than any store-bought could ever be! I’d suggest just deciding “today is the day! I will get home from work and make the dough right away.” Then an hour later when dinner is cooking up, fry the naan up. I promise it’s worth the extra effort.

Bread. What would life be like without glorious delicious bread? Seriously think about it. Bread is everywhere and it would be a sad sad world without bread.

One bread that I have always been beyond excited to eat and enjoy is Indian naan bread. It is a soft and fluffy almost pillowy flatbread with adorably charred air bubbles. A flat bread perfect for dipping in rich curries or even using as a wrap for satay or tikka style chicken. It is light and buttery in flavor with a faint tartness that, I have learned, comes from the yogurt.

I have yet to go to an Indian restaurant with bad naan. Mmm it always seems to come out hot and fresh and perfect to devour. On the other hand, I have bought not so great store-bought naan. Normally it is overpriced, bland and sadly not fresh. Obviously in a pinch, store-bought is the way to go, but if you can have the time to plan ahead for about 15 minutes of work and an hour to let it raise, then it is totally worth it!

Making naan is fun. The ingredients are simple things that you probably have at home already. Flour, yogurt, salt, sugar, and yeast. Then it’s all about mixing, kneading, waiting, and frying up!

Smaller naan are great for tearing up and dipping. Bigger ones are great served as a wrap with grilled meats and veggies inside. You can even make naan bread pizza. This versatile bread is a favorite for little ones. Since it is so soft, it’s even great when they don’t have a lot of teeth.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 oz active dry yeast
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt (Greek works too!)
  • 1 tablespoon oil plus more for greasing skillet
  • 3 tablespoons melted salted butter
  • Parsley roughly chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. In the large stand mixer or mixing bowl, add the sugar, warm water, and yeast together. Stir to combine. Let mixture sit for 10 minutes until foamy and activated.
  2. Add the flour, yogurt, and oil to the yeast mixture. Knead the dough in a standmixer with dough hook or by hand on a floured surface for 10 minutes. Dough will be elastic and a sticky.
  3. In a lightly greased bowl, place dough, cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place. Let the dough sit for an hour or until it doubles in size.
  4. Divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions. On a lightly floured working area roll a dough portion into a roughly 8 inch circle or ovals. The circles don't need to be perfect
  5. Heat up a skillet (cast-iron is the best here) over medium-high heat with a little oil to avoid the dough from sticking to the skillet. Brush the naan with the melted butter on once side. Place the dough butter side down on the skillet. When it starts to puff and bubble, brush the other side with butter and flip it over to cook the other side. Remove and sprinkle with salt. Repeat the same method with the remaining dough portions.
  6. Serve warm.

Notes

Best served warm. Naan keeps in the fridge for a few days or frozen well wrapped. Frozen then thawed naan is great for little naan pizzas too!
