We originally shared our air fryer mug cake recipe back in 2016 and felt that this air fryer chocolate favourite needed a vanilla mug cake version as well as a few extra air fryer cooking tips.

Air Fryer Mug Cake
The whole microwave thing was always lost on me. I used to use it like my mum for heating up food and it was fantastic for an old pizza slice you had left over from the night before.
I remember briefly hearing about these famous chocolate mug cakes in the microwave. You stirred a few ingredients, added it to the microwave and then you had a chocolate cake in a mug, or chocolate mug cake as many call them.
To this day, I still have not made a microwave chocolate mug cake!!! I just want to buy a microwave right now just to try one and see what all the fuss is about.
But instead as soon as we got into our air fryer, one of the first things Dominic made for me was an air fryer chocolate mug cake.
Following similar principles to the microwave but using the air fryer instead.
The chocolate mug cake in the air fryer rules goes as follows:
- Must help my chocolate cravings
- Must be few ingredients
- Must be almost free of washing up
Well he didn’t disappoint, and this chocolate mug cake today, is the one that we have been making since 2011 in our air fryer, that has been tweaked over the years.
Simple Mug Cake Recipe
To keep my mug cake recipe simple, what I do is I mix it all over the air fryer. There is hardly any weighing of ingredients to be done either.
The base of our chocolate mug cake is inspired by our air fryer ganache. This gives it a chocolate sauce base and means that your chocolate mug cake is light and creamy and low on flour.
Unlike a cake in the air fryer that is very much flour heavy, this chocolate mug cake only uses a small amount of flour and its all about the chocolate.
Mug Cake No Chocolate Chips
I never buy chocolate chips. I hate how expensive they are and hate the fact that they are not as nice as chopped up chocolate.
Use chopped up chocolate instead and you can pick your favourite chocolate bar and mix and match the flavours of your mug cake.
My favourite is Dairy Milk, Galaxy, or Terry’s Chocolate Orange or if I am really getting the best chocolate in my mug cake it will be Lindt.
To do this take your chocolate bar to room temperature. Then using a sharp knife dice your chocolate into small pieces like you would if you were dicing vegetables.
Chocolate Mug Cake Recipe No Vanilla Extract
If I avoid the vanilla extract, then my chocolate mug cake falls under a 5 ingredient or less recipe. If I am making a chocolate mug cake I do so without vanilla. Though if I am going with a vanilla with white chocolate option, I add it in.
Mug Cake Ingredients
There are 5 main ingredients that make up a mug cake:
- Greek Yoghurt
- Chocolate
- Butter
- Flour
- Honey
You can swap honey for maple syrup or use another sugar that you have in your pantry.
You can also use any favourite chocolate that you have in.
You can swap Greek yoghurt for anything that will make your mug cake creamy. Think coconut milk, single cream, double cream, fromage frais or even a flavoured yoghurt.
How Do You Make A Mug Cake?
Air fryer mug cake goes as follows:
- In a ramekin load up butter and chocolate chunks along with honey.
- Air fry until the chocolate is melted and stir well.
- Stir in other ingredients into your ramekin.
- Air fry and binge.
There is a little more to it than that, but those are the simple basics!
Air Fryer Vanilla Mug Cake
To make vanilla mug cake in the air fryer, you just need to make some slight adjustments to our recipe.
- Swap the chocolate for white chocolate
- ½ your honey
- Add in a tablespoon of vanilla essence
It tastes just as good and you can also use a cake box mix if you prefer.
Or another of my favourite options is to use our air fryer chocolate cake, or our air fryer sponge cake mix. Or next time you are making a cake in the air fryer, save some for some mug cakes.

Notes
Measurements. I have used tablespoons so that you can avoid having to weigh out ingredients.
Swap. I used Dairy Milk in this recipe, but you can swap with your favourite chocolate. As long as the chocolate melts well.
Portions. This mug cake is for 2 ramekins and you can adjust for how many people you are feeding.
Optional. To make it a little more chocolatey you can also add in a little cocoa powder. It makes it richer and gives it a taste similar to shop bought muffins.
Important. Always use self raising flour. If you don’t the mug cake will not rise and will be flat.
