Near Northeast, or "NoMa," is a highly boring and moderately dangerous neighborhood. Two of the three people I know in this neighborhood have been robbed on the street, and one of them also had their car broken into. Every building in this area advertises as "luxury," but most seem poorly managed, with many of their amenities overcrowded or consistently out of service (in addition to paper-thin walls). There is a large homeless population living in tents underneath the highways that run through the neighborhood, which isn't in and of itself problematic, but, unfortunately, as a woman, you are often subject to vile catcalling. While the glassy buildings give the facade of this being an urban, walkable area, there are few restaurants you could even walk to. Almost everyone in this area has a car they street park, making finding parking even more of a hassle. Other gentrified neighborhoods in DC are much safer and have more things to do.

Living in NorthEast Washington DC has been wonderful. The metro and multiple buses are a few minutes walk from where we live. There are many restaurants, fast food places, and bars near by. The area feel incredibly safe and walkable. There are so many families and dog around, so it feels like a wonderful area to live in.

I've lived in NoMA for 2 years and really like it. It's dense with interesting young professionals who are very accepting, ambitious, sometimes a little basic, but usually really intelligent and unique, and strangely attractive. Dogs definitely outnumber children. Housing is a mix between gorgeous old row houses on tree-lined streets, low income housing, and tall new construction apartments with pools on the roof (ie it's gentrifying). Most things you need are within walking distance (there's like a billion grocery stores every few feet it seems). Being on the red line, you can get to most places you want to go without needing a car. The problem with NoMA though is that you probably shouldn't walk far at night. There are pockets of nightlife but in between the pockets it's just quiet enough to where there isn't the safety of a crowd. You have to walk through gauntlets of homeless tents under the many bridges. Generally the communities coexist peacefully, but it can get uncomfortable.
