Main Street death treated as suspicious

10:15 AM

A 33-year-old man’s death is being treated as suspicious by Winnipeg police, after his body was found in a residential suite in the inner city.

Police said Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service members discovered the man while attending a medical call for service at a building in the 600 block of Main Street at about 10:45 a.m. Thursday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the major crimes unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.

Boy, 15, among three charged in double homicide

12:50 PM

RCMP have charged two more suspects, including a 15-year-old boy, in a double homicide in The Pas.

The victims, men aged 37 and 42, died after they were found injured outside a home in the northern Manitoba town at about 4 a.m. on Jan. 15.

RCMP said the additional suspects — Keith Campbell, 20, and the teenage boy, who are both from Moose Lake — have been charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

A 17-year-old boy, also from Moose Lake, was charged with the same counts in January.

COVID-19 cases rising

12:58 PM

COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Manitoba.

There were 150 lab-confirmed COVID cases recorded, and the weekly test positivity rate has risen to 14.2 per cent, according to the latest information available from the provincial government.

There were 59 hospitalizations, eight intensive-care admissions and two COVID deaths recorded during the week of Feb. 26 to March 4, today’s province’s respiratory virus report shows. The number of hospitalizations increased slightly since the previous week, and are now at the highest point they’ve been in the past two months.

Transmission of influenza appears to be low in the province; no flu-related hospitalizations or deaths were recorded last week. No data on respiratory syncytial virus was included in the report.

Police watchdog investigating after Bloodvein man dies

1:27 PM

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating after a Bloodvein First Nation man died after officers took him to a nursing station.

The IIU said on Friday that RCMP officers were called about an intoxicated person causing a disturbance in a residence on the reserve on March 7 at about 2:20 p.m.

When they arrived, the officers found a man lying on the floor who was breathing and responsive.

The officers themselves took the man to the nursing station because there wasn’t an ambulance available. Nursing staff found the man unresponsive and he was pronounced dead.

The IIU said they are investigating because the matter involved a death. Anyone with any information is asked to call the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.

Bloodvein is located 235 km north of Winnipeg.

Gee-Gees hammer Wesmen in U Sports quarter-final

2:53 PM

Guillaume Pepin scored 22 points to lead the No. 2-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees to a 91-70 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen at the U Sports national men’s championship in Halifax Friday afternoon.

The seventh-ranked Wesmen, who trailed 42-25 at halftime, got 20 points and 10 rebounds from Mike Mikhailov.

Winnipeg now falls to the consolation side.

12-hour clinic set to open at HSC

3:01 PM

A new minor treatment clinic is set to open this summer on the first floor of the Health Sciences Centre.

The province is spending $3 million in operational funding to open the clinic. It is expected to be open 12 hours a day, staffed with one doctor, one nurse, and possibly a nurse practitioner.

Health Minister Audrey Gordon and HSC management announced the clinic Friday afternoon, saying it is expected to take pressure off the ER for patients who don’t have other access to treatment for minor injuries.
