HotelTonight – Great Deals on Last-Minute Hotels in Cheyenne Wyoming

When most people think of Cheyenne, they picture a town that has the spirit of the Old West, filled with antique steam engines and historic mansions. While this is certainly an accurate depiction of the capital of Wyoming, there's also so much more to Cheyenne than just its rich history. This city also has a vibrant arts scene, a surprisingly great culinary scene and, of course, boundless opportunities for outdoors adventure. So when I had the opportunity to visit Cheyenne, Wyoming, I took it without hesitation. I simply pulled up the HotelTonight app on my phone, scrolled through the selection of Cheyenne hotels, and minutes later, I had booked a great hotel in the heart of downtown Cheyenne. With a hotel room waiting for me in Cheyenne, I headed to the airport to kick off my spur-of-the-moment Wyoming getaway.

Historic Downtown

I was lucky enough to find a great hotel in Cheyenne's historic downtown, which fully embraces its rich Western heritage. The entire neighborhood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and there's no shortage of historic charm and character on every downtown street. On one block, you'll pass by old Western candy shops and souvenir shops, while on the next block, you'll walk past a trendy restaurant housed in a historic building. Since I stayed in downtown Cheyenne, I was able to walk everywhere in the neighborhood, so I got a great sense of the character of this historic district and for the daily lives of the people who live here.

The Old West

Cheyenne is very proud of its Western heritage, and it has preserved it well. If you're interested in seeing what life was like in the Old West, you can visit places in Cheyenne like the Terry Bison Ranch, a 30,000-acre ranch that features horseback riding, bison tours on a rain and a traditional Trading Post, or the Cheyenne Depot, a stunning 19th century railroad station that has now been transformed into a museum. And, of course, you'll be out exploring different areas of Cheyenne and suddenly stumble onto an old-fashioned saloon, so no matter where you are in the city, you'll be surrounded by vestiges of the Old West.

Landmarks

Given the fact that Cheyenne is the capital of Wyoming and also boasts a rich history, it's no surprise that the city is filled with important landmarks. Naturally, Cheyenne is home to the Wyoming State Capitol, a beautiful building dating from the late 19th century. Other notable historic buildings you may come across during your stay in Cheyenne include the Nagle Warren Mansion, the Atlas Theatre and the Historic Plains Hotel. As somewhat of a history buff myself, I was fascinated by all of the well-preserved historic sights in Cheyenne. It's clear that locals are very proud and protective of their history, which is one of the reasons why Cheyenne is such a unique city to visit.

Parks and Recreation

When you travel to Wyoming, you should expect to spend a good amount of time outdoors. After all, it's one of the most beautiful states in the country. Cheyenne has plenty to offer outdoors enthusiasts, as both the Curt Gowdy State Park and the Vedauwoo Recreation Area are nearby. Whether you want to go hiking, fishing for rainbow trout and salmon, rock climbing, mountain biking or kayaking, Cheyenne has something to excite you. For anybody who loves the great outdoors, Wyoming is like a big playground, so you can bet that I took advantage of my time in Cheyenne and spent as much time immersed in nature as I could.

Frontier Days

If you're lucky enough to find yourself in Cheyenne during Frontier Days like I was, you're in for a real treat. This 10-day outdoor rodeo and Western celebration has earned the nickname, "The Daddy of 'em All," and it's one of the most unique, exciting events I've ever attended. This long, celebrated festival features traditional rodeo events like barrel racing, steer wrestling and bull riding, but it also features other community events, such as parades, carnivals and cook-offs. I don't know how I got so lucky to stumble upon Frontier Days, but I already know I want to return another year for this one-of-a-kind festival.
