- Where can I watch Made in Abyss?
Made in Abyss made a big splash back in 2017, thanks to an adorable art style and grimdark sensibilities that were a match made in viral heaven.
Casual and hardcore anime fans alike flocked to the show and were over the moon when it received a follow-up movie and a complete second season in the years that followed.
But if you're new to the franchise, it can be a little confusing knowing where to start, thanks to a number of recap movies that muddy the water. Don't worry though, we've got you covered.
So grab your spelunking gear, along with any sort of emotional support you can find, and get ready to dive in.
Made in Abyss watch order
Despite how it seems, the watch order for Made in Abyss is fairly simple. The show and films were released in chronological order, so you essentially can just jump from one to the next, like so:
Made in Abyss season one (2017)
This is where it all started. Made in Abyss season one consists of 13 episodes, each 20-22 minutes long, and is absolutely worth your time. The show's intoxicating strange mix of cutesy anime tropes with sinister twists and turns will leave even the most seasoned fan shocked.
Made in Abyss: Journey's Dawn (2019) and Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight (2019)
However, if that sounds like a little too much of a timesink. You could go ahead and watch the above recap movies, which offer a condensed version of the show’s first 13 episodes. Journey's Dawn, which covers the events of the first eight episodes, clocks in at just under two hours, while Wandering Twilight, which covers episodes 9-12, is 108 minutes long.
Overall, we'd recommend watching the original series over these movies since the extra time you get to spend with the core cast of characters makes everything that happens all the more bittersweet.
Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul (2020)
After season one, you should watch Dawn of the Deep Soul aka the first proper Made in Abyss movie. The film picks up directly after episode thirteen and continues the tragic adventure.
Made in Abyss season two (2022)
And finally, you should watch Made in Abyss season two. The sequel season aired in 2022 and ran for eight episodes, reuniting fans with some of the characters they loved from season one.
Where can I watch Made in Abyss?
Now you know the best order to watch Made in Abyss, actually finding it is a bit trickier as the show is currently unavailable on Crunchyroll.
Instead, anime fans in the UK and US can find season one and two, both recap films, and Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul on HIDIVE.
HIDIVE is available on its own or through Prime Video's 'channels' (although you'll need a Prime Video membership to access it this way).
HIDIVE memberships are available for $4.99 per month or $47.99 for a whole year. New subscribers can also watch Made in Abyss for free with a seven-day trial.
