Is an AmStaff a XL bully? ›

An XL Bully-type dog is a larger and more muscular variant of the wider American Bully breed. It first emerged in the US in the late 1980s, when American Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Bull Terriers were crossed.

The male dog weighs around 50 to 70 pounds, while the female weighs 40 to 55 pounds. The average American Staffordshire Terrier's lifespan is 12 to 16 years. AmStaffs are muscular terriers with a broad head, well-defined jaws, round dark eyes, and refined cheekbones.

A type of pit bull – often confused with the much-feared pit bull terriers – Staffordshire terriers can be affectionate family pets and excellent companions. However, they are also extraordinarily strong-willed and are prone to displaying aggressive behavior toward both people and animals.

So while every American Staffordshire Terrier can technically be called an American Pit Bull Terrier, not every American Pit Bull Terrier is an American Staffordshire Terrier.)

Male Amstaffs weigh up to 70 lbs while females weigh up to 55 lbs. Pitbulls tend to be taller – with males at 21 inches and females and 20 inches – and lighter with males up to 50 lbs and females up to 60 lbs. Generally, Amstaffs have less visible muscle tone than Pitbulls despite their greater weight.

If your dog is another established breed such as those recognised by the UK Kennel Club with some similar characteristics to an XL bully, you do not need to worry about the ban, however crossbreeds might be affected.

Staffy Behaviour Problems

Due to their intensely social and active nature, Staffies can develop some behavioural problems such as separation anxiety, destructive chewing, digging and escaping if they are left to become bored or lonely. This makes environmental and social enrichment especially important for this breed.

A solid work ethic, high intelligence, and a robust athletic build make the AmStaff a capable canine sports competitor. The breed excels in any activity owners want to teach, especially agility, obedience, dock diving, carting, search and rescue, and protection.

American Staffordshire Terriers are very loyal to their families and usually good with children. Known as intelligent, hard-working, and stoic, AmStaffs make excellent guard dogs. Though they're good-natured, they may be protective of their families.

When does a Staffy's head split? Sometime after they are around 6 months old, but usually older, a Staffy puppy's head will “split”. This process is called a lot of things, from spreading to splitting to cracking. Despite the names, it has nothing to do with their skull or anything breaking.

Do American Staffies like to cuddle? ›

Staffordshires are a very loving breed that want nothing more than to settle down for a cuddle with you after a fun-filled day. It is their sweet nature, their ability to romp and play and then cuddle and chill out, that keeps them near the top of the 'most popular breeds list' around the world.

While both breeds have the reputation of being aggressive towards people, in both breeds, this is false. The American Pit Bull Terrier is known to be more affectionate and friendly towards all people when compared to the American Staffordshire. However, the Staffordshire is still a very friendly and warm dog.

As for their cohort, the APBT is also known to be a very friendly, affectionate bully breed. It has been noted that they tend to be more serious and less enthusiastic compared to the happy-go-lucky Staffies, but they are most definitely people dogs through and through.

Staffies are not generally barkers, but they are vocal and can be entertaining with various snorts, snores, grunts, and groans, as well as his singing voice! These dogs are fun to be around and although boisterous by nature, with the correct handling and training they develop lovely characters with huge personalities.

The AM staff is about 17–20 inches tall, and weighs 45–70 pounds. The Staffordshire (English) is smaller, up to 16 inches tall, and half the weight. In my experience, Staffies (English) are better with kids, and more intelligent/obedient, but that's just a personal opinion.

American XL bully's are dogs are close to the pitbull terrier and have been crossbred with other breeds such as English bulldogs, Olde English Bulldogge and American bulldogs. XL's got recognition as a breed from the US United Kennel Club in 2013 but they are not recognised by the main dog associations in the UK.

A Staffordshire Bull Terrier is one of the smaller of the recognized bully breeds with a detailed breed standard. They are short, stout, and absolutely adorable.
